In the Words of Randy, Reflecting on a Career as a Social Worker
“Greetings, My name is Randy and I have worked as a Medical Social Worker at the Grand Rapids, MI branch of Elara Caring Hospice for the last seven years. As I prepare to retire and reflect back upon my career as a social worker, I wanted to share how the Elara Caring Hospice Foundation has been a blessing to our organization and the patients and families that we have worked with. Anyone who has cared for someone who can no longer care for themselves and are nearing death knows what a long, draining and often emotionally challenging experience that can be. Anything that can be done to make a patient more comfortable during this process, as well as provide support and relief for families and caregivers is appreciated and welcomed.
Over the years I have made requests of the Foundation for items for patients, such as fans, humidifiers, non-covered equipment and safety items, and more. The list has been endless. Some patients and their families have also requested Lasting Wishes, such as paying for a patient to travel out of state to visit friends and relatives or fulfilling other lifelong wishes. The Foundation has been able to quickly agree to and finance these patient and family wishes. Words cannot describe the gratitude felt by these patients, families, and caregivers when something that brings joy and comfort is provided for them!
One of the major goals of our company is to enhance the quality of life for a terminally ill patient for as long as possible. Our Foundation has been able to support this for an untold number of patients and families. While many patients and families decline to share their stories to maintain their privacy, I can assure you that many of them are out there! It has been a privilege to work alongside a Foundation that is committed to meeting the needs of our patients and families.”
