Virtual Reality Brings the World to Ms. B
Bringing the World to Charlotte Through VR
As the Toledo, Ohio Elara Caring Hospice branch began testing the new virtual reality (VR) system funded by the Elara Caring Hospice Foundation, Volunteer Coordinator Kate received a referral for a patient who might enjoy participating in the program. That introduction turned into an experience that demonstrated just how meaningful this technology can be.
Charlotte, or “Ms. B”, was eager to give virtual reality a try – and she was ready to “go” just about anywhere! During her first session, Charlotte experienced a serene lake surrounded by mountains, sat in the middle of an active puppy playpen, rode through a drive-through zoo, took the stage for a performance of The Nutcracker and explored several other destinations.
Kate shared how enthusiastic Charlotte was throughout the experience:
“She is so sharp and was willing to try out anything we pulled up! When I loaded beautiful scenery like a forest, mountains or the aurora borealis, she would say, ‘Is this what heaven looks like? It’s so beautiful!’”
Charlotte’s reaction was just as meaningful to RN Case Manager Jody, who saw the joy on her face.
“She was glowing, and her smile showed it. I know she was ‘in heaven,’ as she put it. It was great being able to take her places without leaving the facility.”
Charlotte enjoyed the experience so much that she was already looking forward to her next session.
When Kate returned, she knew Charlotte loved music, so she selected a virtual “live” piano concert. As they talked, Charlotte shared that she had once played the piano herself. While the pianist performed on screen, Charlotte began gracefully moving her fingers across an imaginary keyboard on her lap – as though she were playing right along.
Once again, she was smiling from ear to ear.
Kate described the moment as fascinating to watch. What began as an opportunity to experience something new had also created a connection to Charlotte’s own memories, interests and life story.
Charlotte’s virtual travels are just beginning.
She grew up in Tennessee and frequently talks about her memories of home. The Toledo hospice team is now looking forward to exploring with Charlotte and seeing where the technology might take her next – perhaps even back to some of her old stomping grounds.
Mynd VR is a program designed to provide virtual opportunities for delight, curiosity and exploration for hospice patients whose time, energy and/or resources are limited.
Generously supported through gifts to the Elara Caring Hospice Foundation. Wonderfully implemented though the assistance of our volunteer program. Resulting in a truly meaningful partnership that benefits patients and their families as they navigate end-of-life.
